Research institute of Geodesy webpage  About us

Institute of Geodesy was established by resolution of Scientific Council of Vilnius Technical University on January 29, 1992.

Activities of Institute of Geodesy are mostly related to establishment of National Geodetic Reference and solution of related scientific problems. Such activities are coordinated by National Land Board at the Ministry of Agriculture.

Lithuanian National GPS Networks have been established by the Institute of Geodesy in cooperation with other organisations and taking part in programs coordinated by International Association of Geodesy, Nordic Geodetic Commission and other international organisations. European Coordinate System ETRS 89 was transferred to Lithuania through 4 Zero Order GPS Network points in 1992. First Order GPS Network connecting 48 points (mean distance between points - 40 km) was established in 1992–1993. Network established with GPS receivers donated by Danish Government. Second Order GPS Network, connecting 1026 points (mean distance between points - 8 km) was established in 1994–1996.

Institute of Geodesy has prepared the data for introduction of Lithuanian National Coordinate System LKS 94, has established calibration baseline for geodetic instruments. Institute has performed coordination of the objects at Vilnius, Kaunas and Šiauliai airports according the requirements of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

Institute of Geodesy with help of Finnish Geodetic Institute with precision ballistic gravimeter has performed high accuracy absolute gravity value determination in Klaipėda, Panevėžys and Vilnius in 1994 and 2002.

Lithuanian National First Order Gravimetric Network connecting 48 points was established with help of Polish Institute of Geodesy and Cartography in 1998-2002.

A permanent GPS station was established at the Vilnius airport in collaboration with Lithuanian Direction of Civil Aviation and A. Gustaitis Institute of Aviation, VGTU in 1995. With support of Onsala Space Observatory (Sweden) observations at permanent station according international programs EUREF, DOSE, WENEGER have been started in 1996. Permanent GPS station Vilnius was included into EUREF network of European permanent GPS stations in 1999.

Wide scope of aerophotogrammetric cartographic activities were performed at the Laboratory of Digital Aerophotogrammetry of Institute of Geodesy in solution of actual problems of digital photogrammetry.

Laboratory of Calibration of Institute of Geodesy has received a certificate of accreditation in EDM instruments calibration from Lithuanian National Accreditation Bureau in 2001.

At present Institute is involved in research of Lithuanian territory geodynamics, gravitation, magnetic field and geoid determination. Institute takes part in establishment of Lithuanian National Geodetic Vertical and Gravimetric Networks, creation of Vilnius City digital map, works on Geodetic Reference Information System, investigates Earth’s crust vertical movements at the geodynamic polygon of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant.
